Supervisors updated on storm debris cleanup

A lack of a quorum during Monday’s Leflore County Board of Supervisors meeting meant no action could be taken on agenda items.
District 1’s Sam Abraham and District 3’s Anjuan Brown were the only two of the county’s five supervisors who showed up at the courthouse for the regularly scheduled board meeting.

Ex-Greenwood cop pleads guilty to drug charges

GREENVILLE — A former Greenwood police officer pleaded guilty Friday to charges tied to a federal crackdown on drug trafficking in the Mississippi Delta.
Jamario Sanford, 38, pleaded guilty to charges involving the transportation and distribution of cocaine through Leflore, Sunflower and Washington counties.

Late Monday afternoon, folks were noticing an extra large white moon as it rose over the skyline before sunset. Tuesday morning, early risers were watching a moon of a different color, a rusty red. The Blood Moon’s color was created when the earth’s shadow fell across the moon’s surface.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
