Man charged with rape, kidnapping

The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department has charged a Sunflower County resident with rape and kidnapping.

According to Sheriff Ricky Banks, 38-year-old Jessie Lee Dennis Jr., 25 Belks Road, Blaine, is accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in his vehicle Wednesday.

County up to 13 coronavirus cases

Thirteen people in Leflore County had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health.

That’s three more than were recorded a day earlier.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
