Yet another annual Greenwood event has fallen victim to the coronavirus: Que on the Yazoo.
The annual event, sanctioned by the Memphis Barbecue Network, gives an outlet to barbecue enthusiasts to strut their stuff in different competitions.
Usually held the first weekend of May, the event has been canceled. It will instead be called Que-Mmunity Celebration & Tailgate and will be held later.
“There will be no registration fees, no competition, but there will be music and the good time we all look forward to each May,” said Brantley Snipes of Main Street Greenwood, which puts on Que on the Yazoo each year.
The event will be held downtown and is focused on ensuring that “downtown remains a vital destination to live, work and play.”
“We still want people to come down and cook and hang out, just more casual,” Snipes said.
Small businesses or artisans can still sign up to set up vending booths.
Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams put out an emergency order on Monday limiting social gatherings to 10 or fewer people. This order was put in place for 15 days but can be shortened or lengthened by the City Council at any time. This is in tandem with the Centers for Disease Control guidelines for events and mass gatherings.
After many have been quarantined or otherwise cooped up at home, Snipes thinks that this event will be just what the community needs to bounce back and return to normal. “We want to highlight our local businesses and all the hospital and marketplace workers,” she said.
