Itta Bena teen charged with agg. assault

The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department has charged an Itta Bena youth with aggravated assault.

Cortez Davis, 14, of 501 Schley St. was charged by deputies Wednesday. As of Thursday, Davis was still being held at the Leflore County Jail. Sheriff Ricky Banks could not be reached Thursday for more details.

Ban on panhandling could be removed from Greenwood code

A ban on panhandling in Greenwood, which a nonprofit watchdog group argues is unconstitutional, may soon be removed from the city’s code of ordinances.

Mayor Carolyn McAdams says the City Council will be presented a resolution for a vote on Tuesday that would repeal the city’s ban on panhandling.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
