Hosemann: Senate looking to crack down on truancy

Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann wants to see local school districts crack down on chronic absenteeism.
The state average is 24%, but Greenwood specifically has a chronic absenteeism rate of 40%. One of the ways the Mississippi Senate plans to address that is making sure school districts have truancy officers.

Softball tourney to benefit woman with cancer

A softball tournament will be held Oct. 18 at Stribling Park to raise money for a Greenwood resident battling colon cancer.
The Fall Ball Benefit Tournament will support Sandy Bartlett, who was diagnosed in June.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
