Amanda Elzy made a bit of history Wednesday as it played its first tennis matches as an organized team in the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District.
The Panthers, fielding a team for the first time in three decades under the direction of first-year coach Kenneth Milton Jr., lost to Greenwood High 7-0 in the first set of matches, and then dropped a 7-0 decision in a second set of matches using a pro-set format.
“I was just glad to get a group of young people together to experience organized tennis for the first time,” said Milton, who played tennis at GHS and Mississippi Valley State. “We were all excited about the opportunity and we learned a lot about what we need to work on to develop our games.”
Officially, only four matches were played in the first games. No matches were played in boys and girls singles and in No. 2 boys doubles. GHS got forfeit wins in those matches.
In No. 1 boys doubles, Darrell Harris and Luisha Stanley defeated Elzy’s duo of Jaqone Fleming and Kaylen Gardner 6-0, 6-0.
In No. 1 girls doubles, Greenwood’s Kendall Smith and Davianna Brent beat Katrina Carter and Andrea Anderson 6-0, 6-0. In No. 2 girls doubles, Arlonda Henderson and Stephany Lugo defeated Wanda Walker and Caprice’Ana Reed 6-0, 6-1.
In the mixed doubles match, GHS’ duo of Janiyah Henderson and Terron Westerfield defeated Elzy’s Treylon Walker and Alexis Williams 6-0, 6-0.
In the pro-set matches, David Kelly and Trevor Russell beat Fleming and Gardner 8-1 in No. 1 boys doubles.
In No. 1 girls doubles, Greenwood’s Smith and Brent beat Carter and Anderson 8-0. In No. 2 girls doubles, Henderson and Kortney Crosby won by forfeit due to injury.
In mixed doubles, Janiyah Henderson and Westerfield won 8-0 over Walker and Williams.
Greenwood is slated to host Leflore County Monday. Elzy faced off against Leflore on Wednesday night.
