Pillow Academy survived a scare from Indianola Academy to post a 10-7 win over the Colonels Friday at Coleman Field in Utroska Park.
Pillow (6-4) scored five runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fifth and two in the sixth. The Colonels scored one run in the first, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Nelson Hodges, the third Mustang pitcher, got the win to improve to 2-0. He went 3 1/3 innings. Drew Lamb started on the mound and pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and fanning six. Trace Schmitz followed Lamb on the mound.
Hodges had two hits, and Lamb, Elliott Flowers and Dayne Sanford had a hit each. JC Garrard drew four walks.
Pillow hits the road Tuesday through Thursday to play in the Battle at the Beach. The Mustangs take on Columbia High School at noon Tuesday at Biloxi High School. Wednesday, Pillow plays Terry High School at 5 p.m. and Canton Academy at 7:30 p.m. at Vancleave High School. Thursday, the Mustangs face Bay High at 3:30 p.m. at Ocean Springs High School.
- Carroll Academy: The Rebels outscored Horn Lake 3-1 in the eighth inning to pick up an 11-9 win over the Eagles Thursday in Horn Lake.
Carroll scored two runs each in the first, second, fourth and seventh innings. Horn Lake tacked on one in the second, five in the fourth and two in the sixth. Carroll outhit the Eagles 12-7.
Lofton Holly (2-1) got the win in relief of Ryan Logan. Holly went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking four and fanning six. Logan went 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on two hits, walking five and striking out six.
William Panni led the way at the plate with a 3-for-5 showing. He had a single, double and home run, scored one run and drove in four. Holly also had three hits as he collected two singles and a double, scored twice and had one RBI.
Ethan Mims had two doubles and scored three runs, and Maddox Carpenter had two singles and scored twice. Drew Thomas and Logan had a single apiece. Logan also drove in two runs, and both scored a run each.Carroll’s game at Oak Hill Friday was canceled. The Rebels (3-2) return March 21 at Humphreys Academy.
- J.Z. George: The Jaguars opened Region 2-2A play at Bruce Thursday and dropped a pair of games to the Trojans.
Bruce won the first game 11-0 as it scored seven runs in the second and four in the third.
Brandon McKenzie took the loss as he struck out two. Alex Criss and Hayden Bryant had the lone hits for the Jaguars.In the second game, Bruce won 15-0 by plating two in the first, 10 in the second and three in the third.
Keiyhaun Wilks took the loss on the mound.The Jaguars play host to Amanda Elzy Monday for a pair of games.
- J.Z. George softball: J.Z. George’s girls fast-pitch softball team picked up its first wins of the season as they swept a doubleheader from visiting Holmes County Thursday in North Carrollton.
J.Z. George won the first game 14-2 as Saralyn Roberts got the win in the circle. She fanned four, walked three and allowed no hits.
Rebecca and Jessica Cornish, Abbygale Clardy and Roberts had a single each. Both Cornish girls and Roberts scored two runs each, and Hollie Jones, Tamya Robinson and Christyana Seals also scored two runs each. Clardy, Kayleigh French and Rylan Hancock scored one run apiece.
In the second game, Rebecca Cornish got the win in a 16-1 victory for the Lady Jags. She allowed just one hit, walking three and fanning two.
Rebecca Cornish, Makayla Cobbins and Kaylee Wilkinson had a single each. Cornish also scored three times, and Cobbins, Wilkinson, Addison Elliott and Cady Jones scored two runs each.
Kiya Brown, Seniya Harbin, Georgia Parker and Eowyn Carpenter scored a run apiece.
