Young Mustangs capture a district title by beating Bayou

It wasn’t all bad news on the gridiron at Pillow Academy this week.
On the eve of Friday’s varsity loss to Heritage, the junior Mustangs flexed on rival Bayou Academy to the tune of 42-6 as they dominated from start to finish to claim a conference championship and finish at 6-1.

Heritage cruises to lopsided victory

For the second straight week, the defense gave Pillow Academy a chance for an upset win, but got zero help from the offense.
Heritage Academy led 14-0 at the half and 21-0 in the third, but the weary defense was just unable to hold up for four quarters, as the Patriots won 28-7 Friday night at Bill Davis Field.

Greenwood High School got crushed last week as it stepped up in class, but nothing would erase that nightmare like winning its district opener.
Fresh off a 42-0 shellacking at the hands of Holmes County Central, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, the Bulldogs open Region 4-4A play Friday night at home against Yazoo City.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
