Statewide canned food drive under way

March of the Mayors, a statewide canned food drive, is under way once again in Greenwood and the Delta region.
The annual event is run by Extra Table, a nonprofit organization with a mission to end hunger and obesity in Mississippi. This year, 51 mayors across five regions have joined together to help collect food for the hungry.

Gala raises money for Little Theatre

Local artists and supporters of Greenwood Little Theatre gathered inside the Museum of the Mississippi Delta on Tuesday night to celebrate creativity and raise money for the theater organization.
Guests observed 17 Chinese porcelain sculptures uniquely painted by artists in the community at the Celebration of the Arts Gala.

Take precautions for animals in cold weather

The Leflore County Humane Society is urging people to keep their pets safe as temperatures continue to drop below freezing.
The best way to keep pets warm is to bring them inside, said Ashley Scott, operations manager of the Humane Society. They should be left out in the freezing weather only for short periods of time, if at all.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
