Community Center to celebrate Black History Month, sixth anniversary Friday

The Greenwood Community Center will hold a Black History Month celebration on Friday at Leflore Legacy Academy.
The event, which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., will also recognize the sixth anniversary of the center.

Supervisors discuss plans for $500,000 in federal funds

Leflore County District 1 Supervisor Sam Abraham said Monday a $500,000 grant Leflore County has received is supposed to go to Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
The county received the grant last April as part of about $5.8 million in federal Community Project Funding distributed throughout Mississippi.

Districts’ grad rates below state average

The graduation rates for all four of the public high schools in Leflore and Carroll counties are below the state’s rate, according to the Mississippi Department of Education’s 2022 accountability report released Thursday.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
