Becky Wammack expected a mundane office job when she became the Leflore County Soil & Water Conservation District clerk nearly four years ago.
A fondness for the community and a passion for teaching turned the position into the complete opposite for the Jackson native.
“I love what I do,” she said. “I come to work excited.”

Center named for McQueen

Dozens of people filled the entrance of the Leflore County Civic Center Friday to celebrate its renaming to the Andrew McQueen Jr. Civic Center.
McQueen spent 35 years working at the Civic Center, retiring last year as its longtime director.

Chinese, Cajun restaurants to replace China Blossom

China Blossom, the family-owned Greenwood restaurant that served classic Chinese-American fare for more than 40 years, is under new ownership that will bring a shared-kitchen concept for two separate restaurants.
Cajun King and Lucky Chow will share the building at 917 U.S. 82 with two sets of menus available.

Judge: Juvenile detention site valuable

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
