Popular chef to be featured at ArtPlace fundraising dinner

ArtPlace Mississippi’s upcoming pop-up dinner will feature Chef Nick Wallace, an Edwards native who has appeared on notable food television programs such as Food Network’s “Chopped” and “Cutthroat Kitchen.”
The exclusive event, Arts-Upfront, will be held April 22 on Front Street, beginning with a signature cocktail at 6 p.m.

Board authorizes bond issue

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board approved a resolution Monday authorizing the sale and issuance of $44 million in bonds to help fund construction of a countywide high school.
The vote was 4-1, with only Magdalene Abraham voting against the resolution. She questioned the lack of architectural plans.

Motion to close youth detention site fails

The Leflore County Juvenile Detention Center will remain open for the time being, as county supervisors deadlocked Monday on a vote on whether to close the facility.
District 1 Supervisor Sam Abraham made the motion to close the center effective May 1 “based on the lack of information being produced” by the facility, he said.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
