Abraham calls for regional juvenile facility

A regional juvenile detention center is needed to serve Leflore County and the surrounding area, says Leflore County Supervisor Sam Abraham.
The topic was discussed during a board meeting Monday at which Sheron Elliott, director of the Leflore County Juvenile Detention Center, appeared.

Salvation Army needs volunteers to help at camp

The Salvation Army of Greenwood needs helping hands next Saturday to prepare Camp Hidden Lake in Lexington for the summer.
The day of volunteer work will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch and dinner provided. Adults and families are welcome. Children must have an adult present to volunteer.

2 students to attend summit in San Francisco

Two 10th grade students from the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District have been selected by Mississippi Delta GEAR UP to attend a leadership summit in San Francisco this summer.
Dallas Johnson of Leflore County High School and Michelle Greene of Greenwood High School were honored at the district school board’s meeting Tuesday.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
