Cotesworth to begin Christmas celebration Nov. 15

A new holiday tradition is arriving at the Cotesworth Culture and Heritage Center.
Starting Nov. 15, the center will turn into a winter wonderland to celebrate the festive season, featuring uniquely decorated Christmas trees, decor and displays.

Tigers pounce on Vardaman, 44-8

Leflore County pounced early on the Vardaman Rams on its way to a 44-8 win in the opening round of the North 1A playoffs in Itta Bena.
A late fourth quarter injury from Vardaman’s Reed Davis, however, dampened any celebratory mood at Marcellus Singleton Stadium as an ambulance was called to the field.

Energy savings project stalled

An energy savings project remains at a standstill as the Leflore County Board of Supervisors consider additional bids to finance the work.
The sealed bids to finance the second phase of the project were opened Monday at the board’s meeting, with four companies bidding: Bank of Commerce, Trustmark, Guaranty Bank and Planters Bank.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
