Schlater man gets 5 years for rape of girl

A 75-year-old Schlater man was sentenced Monday to serve five years in prison in a capital rape case from 2021.
Billy Joe White was convicted of the rape of a girl under the age of 14.

Council to appeal Banks’ removal

The Greenwood City Council has voted to appeal Chancery Judge Willie J. Perkins Sr.’s order removing Marcus Banks from the Greenwood Leflore Hospital Board.

Former Lawrence Printing building catches fire

A long-abandoned downtown building that formerly housed Lawrence Printing Co. caught fire Friday morning.
Three Greenwood Fire Department units responded and, in about 30 minutes, were able to put out the blaze at the building, located at the corner of West Market and Cotton streets, across from the Leflore County Courthouse.

Man who fled police faces multiple charges

A 19-year-old man who fled from Greenwood police while handcuffed Wednesday has been arrested on multiple charges.
Judarrius Cortez Archie, 19, of 1108 Peace St., was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, disorderly conduct, escape from an officer, resisting arrest and destroying public property.
