Inmate charged with murder commits suicide

A Greenwood man charged with capital murder in the 2023 shooting deaths of his wife and her brother died by suicide Monday night in the Holmes County Jail.
Holmes County Sheriff Willie March confirmed Tuesday that Robert Earl Pritchett Jr., 32, had committed suicide.

City wastewater plant to get security help

Nighttime security will be beefed up at Greenwood’s Wastewater Treatment Plant on Ione Street in light of the theft of copper wiring from two of the facility’s sewage pumps Monday night.

Start of 2024 brings more gunfire

Another New Year’s Eve in Greenwood was rung in with a barrage of gunfire, but no one was apparently arrested for it.
Greenwood Police Chief Terrence Craft said on Tuesday that he was aware of only one report of property damage from the celebratory but illegal discharge of firearms into the air at the dawn of the new year.

Banners honoring Black history for sale

Greenwood and Leflore County’s legacy of historic African Americans will be celebrated with banners throughout the city in February for Black History Month.
For the Culture’s Brandice Brown Williams is spearheading the campaign to place as many as 175 banners on available poles in the high-traffic areas of Greenwood.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
