Mustangs routed in Game 1

Magnolia Heights’ baseball team is ranked as the No. 2 team in the state by the Clarion Ledger, and they played like it on Tuesday against Pillow Academy.
The Mustangs hosted the Chiefs for the first game of a best-of-three series in the second round of the MAIS North 5A playoffs, and lost 23-1 in three innings.

PA girls finish second at state

Freshman Izzy Hodges and eighth grader Madeline Carroll took first in No. 1 girls doubles, and the team of eighth grader Sarah Douglas Thach and freshman Jane Kimmel Buford claimed second in No. 2 girls doubles as the Lady Mustangs of Pillow Academy finished 2nd overall at the MAIS Class 5A State tennis tournament on Monday.

Valley still has shot at tournament

Mississippi Valley State University got a much-needed sweep of Alabama A&M over the weekend, keeping its SWAC Tournament hopes alive.
Valley won 6-1 on Friday, 13-7 on Saturday and 10-7 on Sunday.

The Delta Red Bulls U14 girls team recently placed first in the Under-14 Elite Division at the Atlanta Futbol Club Elite Junior Showcase in Atlanta, Georgia. The U14 team had a record of 2-1-1 on the weekend against three teams who are highly-ranked Gold and Silver Division teams in Georgia. The U14 girls are currently ranked No. 2 in the Gold Division and No. 1 in the Silver Division of their age group in Mississippi, No. 16 in Region III in the Silver Division and No. 30 in the United States in the Silver Division. The Delta Red Bulls are being acquired by GYSO

The Delta Red Bulls youth soccer program will soon be run by the Greenwood Youth Soccer Organization, according to Serafin Simon — the creator of the Red Bulls.
It wasn’t an easy decision to give up the leadership of the traveling soccer club that Simon started in 2015, but he said it’s one that has the players interests at heart.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
