House, Tigers focused on regular season finale

Leflore County put up 35 points and held O’Bannon High School scoreless on homecoming night last Friday, earning a key Region 3-2A win and gaining some momentum for the coming playoffs.
“The kids came out and performed in front of a huge crowd, and I’m just happy to get the ‘W,’” Leflore coach Eric House said.

Prep Cross-Country: Carroll boys finish 2nd, Pillow girls claim 4th

The Pillow Academy and Carroll Academy cross-country teams competed in the MAIS state meet Monday, where Carroll’s varsity boys finished second overall in the 4A run, and Pillow’s varsity girls and boys finished in fourth and eighth place, respectively.

Down 14-0 early in the third quarter, the Delta Devils’ defense met Jackson State quarterback Jacobian Morgan at the line of scrimmage and poked the ball free with a ferocious tackle. Cheers erupted as Valley recovered it on JSU’s 16-yard line for a much needed boost.

Winona takes down Elzy

Winona High School is touted as the No. 1 school in the class of 3A and the No. 10 team in the state, and the Tigers lived up to the billing as they handed Amanda Elzy a 38-6 defeat Friday night at R.R. Pickett Field.
“I’m disappointed, I’m not mad,” Elzy coach Morris Bush said.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
