Panthers fall to Winona in North half title game, 49-22

The best football season Amanda Elzy High School has ever had came to a close Friday night in Winona, where Winona High School quarterback Chase Richardson exploded for two first-half rushing touchdowns and threw for two more scores in beating the Panthers 49-22 in the MHSAA Class 3A North half championship.

Mississippi Valley’s women’s basketball earned its first win of the season with an 85-82 victory over McNeese State last Thursday.
Amberly Brown led the way with a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
