Water stood in the yard of T.W. Cooper’s rental property at 601 Schley St. in Itta Bena on Tuesday afternoon. By Thursday, Cooper said most of it had dried up but that there was still standing water under his house from the city opening a fire hydrant nearby Tuesday morning.

Itta Bena resident concerned about flooding

An Itta Bena resident is pressuring the city of Itta Bena due to an oversaturation of water at his rental property.
T.W. Cooper, who owns rental properties on Schley Street, said the yard of his property at 601 Schley St. was flooded earlier this week after the city uncapped a nearby fire hydrant.

Senior citizens prom coming up Thursday

Seniors, find your partners. The Greenwood Community Center is hosting a prom for senior citizens from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday.
Kenderick Cox, the community outreach director for Central Mississippi Inc., said the goal of the prom is to honor the older citizens in Leflore County.

Brown is now president of planning district

Leflore County District 3 Supervisor Anjuan Brown has moved into the presidential seat of the North Central Planning and Development District.
Brown, who was chosen in 2012 by his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors to represent the county with the development district, chaired his first meeting as president on Wednesday.

Superintendent: Lowering absentee rate will require ‘drastic measures’

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.
