Seniors, find your partners. The Greenwood Community Center is hosting a prom for senior citizens from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday.
Kenderick Cox, the community outreach director for Central Mississippi Inc., said the goal of the prom is to honor the older citizens in Leflore County.
“We always want to pay our homage to the people who paved the way and lifestyle for us,” he said. “Especially being around Valentine’s, we wanted to show appreciation and how much we love them as well.”
The prom is free to attend, and no sign-up is required. A live DJ will play music, and refreshments will be provided. Cox also said there will be opportunities for traditional photography as well as a “360 photo booth.” The booth will provide an opportunity for those attending to get a full panoramic view or video of their experience at the prom.
Cox said planning for the event, a collaboration between CMI and the center on Avenue I run by Earnest and Debra Adams, has gone smoothly.
“CMI decided to put together something for the senior citizens of the community, and we asked if we could use their facility,” he said. “Mrs. Adams was more than happy to assist us, just to give back to the elders of the county.”
Adams said she was glad to collaborate with CMI when Cox called because it shows the community that people do care about seniors. “This gives them an opportunity to get out of the house and just enjoy life, and that’s what we as the community are glad to see,” she said.
Cox said the idea for the prom came as he considered how different sections of the community are served.
“We always see things going on for the youth as well as the middle-agers and the millennials, so we just wanted to have a fun event for seniors to show how much we love them and give them a moment to fellowship with others in the community,” he said.
