Officials: Issues GLH faces are felt statewide

Mississippi hospital and government officials say the problems facing Greenwood Leflore Hospital are plaguing the entire state.
“The pandemic only exacerbated the problems we already had,” explained Mississippi Hospital Association CEO Tim Moore to the Greenwood Voters League on Wednesday. “It made it get here sooner.”

Police task force to target gangs

Greenwood Police Chief Terrence Craft told the City Council on Tuesday he is developing a task force to identify and track gang activity.
“This team is going to be very aggressive,” he said. “They’re going to be out in the community, working to try to put an end to all this nonsense and killings.”

2 injured by car, out of hospital

Two Greenwood pedestrians have been released from Greenwood Leflore Hospital after being hit by a car on Tuesday evening while crossing U.S. 82.
Glenn Mitchell and Kimberly Terry were struck by a sedan traveling east at the intersection of U.S. 82 and Strong Avenue around 9:15 p.m.

Memphis med student wins second straight Viking Half Marathon

It was so nice, she had to do it twice: The Viking Half Marathon has a repeat winner for 2022.
Allison Stokes of Memphis was the top finisher in last year’s half marathon and did the same on Saturday.
“Honestly, this is my favorite race of the year,” she said. “I always make sure to come down for it.”

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
