Two Greenwood pedestrians have been released from Greenwood Leflore Hospital after being hit by a car on Tuesday evening while crossing U.S. 82.
Glenn Mitchell and Kimberly Terry were struck by a sedan traveling east at the intersection of U.S. 82 and Strong Avenue around 9:15 p.m.
The two had picked up food and soft drinks at the Double Quick convenience store and were crossing the highway to reach the Golden Coach Inn, where the two had been staying.
Greenwood Police Chief Terrence Craft said that as the two were crossing the four-lane highway, a truck traveling east had stopped to allow them to cross, despite having the right-of-way with a green light. The eastbound sedan attempted to pass the truck and ended up striking both Mitchell and Terry.
Craft said the driver of the sedan was not given a citation. He said there was no evidence of improper driving.
Glenn and Terry were no longer listed as patients at the hospital as of Wednesday afternoon, according to Christine Hemphill, a hospital spokeswoman.
A receptionist at the Golden Coach Inn said the two had completed their stay at the motel.
Jackie Moore, who was waiting Tuesday night in the drive-through lane with family members at the Krystal fast-food restaurant nearby, said the sound of the collision was so loud, “we thought it was two cars.”
Mitchell and Terry were transported in separate ambulances a block away to the hospital. Both were conscious and talking with emergency personnel on the scene.
In addition to the two ambulances, about 10 patrol cars from the Greenwood Police Department, the Leflore County Sheriff's Department and the Mississippi Highway Patrol converged. The officers diverted traffic along the highway for almost 45 minutes while EMTs tended to the injured.
