Thoughtful citizens saw need, organized holiday drives

Where there has been great need in Greenwood, it has been met with great generosity as Christmas Day approaches.
Some events this week — three toy drives and a coat drive — highlight different ways of accomplishing the same goal: helping others.

Several toy drives set this month

As the Christmas holiday approaches, various Leflore County-based organizations will be holding toy drives to ensure children wake up Christmas morning with gifts underneath their trees.
Three toy drives to be held later this month are being organized by KIX 92.7, Central Mississippi Inc. (CMI) and the Greenwood Community Center.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
