Man charged with murder in Friday shooting

The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department has charged a man with murder after a shooting that left one dead Friday evening.
Stephen Davidson, 42, 1317 County Road 160, was arrested and charged with killing Derek Brown, 46, of Greenwood at a convenience store located at the corner of Humphrey Highway and County Road 512.

Community service helps Greenwood native cope with loss

Greenwood has provided a familiar home and a place of healing for Denetra Winston-Spells.
The 49-year-old returned to her hometown in 2016 after the death of her husband, Corey, and is now working in the human resources department of Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

Driver attempted to pass before fatal crash

The fiery Thanksgiving Day accident that took the lives of a high school and a college student from Greenwood was caused when the driver of the vehicle they were in tried to pass a car in front of him, only to collide head-on with an oncoming vehicle, according to authorities.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
