The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department has charged a man with murder after a shooting that left one dead Friday evening.
Stephen Davidson, 42, 1317 County Road 160, was arrested and charged with killing Derek Brown, 46, of Greenwood at a convenience store located at the corner of Humphrey Highway and County Road 512.
Sheriff Ricky Banks said that the convenience store’s security camera provided details of the incident.
He said the two men pulled into the store’s parking lot coming from County Road 512 with Davidson driving and Brown as his passenger. Brown left the vehicle and headed toward the store and was followed by Davidson. Banks said that the footage shows Davidson wielding a gun and shooting Brown several times. Davidson then returned to his vehicle and left the scene.
Emergency services responded to a 911 call at approximately 11 p.m. Brown was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he died, according to the sheriff.
Banks said it will not be known how many times Brown was shot until an autopsy is completed. Deputy Coroner Will Gnemi said the autopsy has been ordered.
Banks said to his knowledge there were no other shooting victims other than Brown. He said that it has been established that Davidson and Brown were friends. As of now, the department is still trying to establish a motive, and the investigation is ongoing.
Davidson remained in the Leflore County Jail Monday.
The homicide is at least the 17th in Leflore County this year, according to reporting by the Commonwealth.
