Supervisors approve 3 road improvement projects

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved three road improvement projects Tuesday but held off on approving a project to clear dead trees along Country Club Drive until more specifics are determined.
The board authorized these projects:
- Repaving Valley Drive, located in District 2, for $35,615.

Greenwood Little Theatre fundraiser set for Saturday

After an initial postponement, Greenwood Little Theatre’s fundraising event has been rescheduled for this weekend.
“A Million Dollar Evening,” which will feature music from the “Million Dollar Quartet,” starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Historic Elk’s Building in downtown Greenwood, 102 W. Washington St.

A yard sign has been temporarily set up where a Mississippi Freedom Trail historical marker was located at the Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market building in Money. That marker was knocked down earlier this week. Allan Hammons of Hammons & Associates, who was instrumental in the marker's installation, believes it was struck accidentally.

Bryant's Grocery marker knocked down

A Mississippi Freedom Trail historical marker in front of the Bryant’s Grocery and Meat Market building in Money, a site relevant to the 1955 slaying of 14-year-old Black Chicago youth Emmett Till, has been knocked off its pole in what one observer said was most likely an accident.

Leflore County Elementary closed from Friday through next week after positive virus test

Leflore County Elementary School will close its campus to students starting Friday after one person there tested positive for COVID-19 Thursday morning, the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District reported on its Facebook page.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
