Author writes book about childhood in Holcomb

In Sarah Payne Reeves’ second book, she wanted to share what it was like growing up in a small Mississippi town in the 1940s and 50s.

“I think it’s very informative about the way life was back then,” said Reeves.

“Joy Cometh In The Morning” features Reeves’ personal account of life growing up in Holcomb.

A Bay Springs native, Kerrie Blakeney moved to Greenwood in May. She represented her new city of residence at the recent Miss Mississippi USA pageant, where she was first runner-up and awarded Miss Congeniality.

With her title of Miss Greenwood USA, Kerrie Blakeney wants to use her position to do some good.

“You don’t really have to have a prestigious title like Miss Mississippi America or USA to make a difference. You just have to start where you are,” she said.

Post 29’s 100-year history available at museum

Keesler-Hamrick-Gillespie American Legion Post 29 recently donated a collection of the post’s history to the Museum of the Mississippi Delta.

Post 29 Commander Johnny Favara said, “I thought it was very important” to have this information available to the public at the museum.

“We really have a first-class museum,” said Favara.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
