Dr. Baker and Lauren Boler exchanged vows March 28. Rather than postponing their wedding, the couple decided to marry with a ceremony that included only 10 people, a drastic change from the 250 guests originally expected to attend before the coronavirus pandemic caused gatherings to be restricted to 10 or less. The couple had been planning their wedding for a year.

Staplcotn accountant loves her work

Beth Aden-Evans will celebrate 35 years at Staplcotn in June.

“I always say, ‘Good Lord willing and Staplcotn willing,’” said Aden-Evans, who enjoys her career as a cash management accountant at the Greenwood-based cotton marketing cooperative. “I love it; I really do.”

One of the purple martin houses along Front Street is home to several of the songbirds. The migratory birds arrived in Greenwood about a month ago and will stay until about the end of July and then head back to South America.

A springtime walk along Front Street in downtown Greenwood features a scenic view.

Adding a special touch to the scenery is the chirping of a dozen or so purple martins on any given sunny day. The birds sing while peeking out from their houses or fluttering around the four homes set up along Front Street more than 20 years ago.

Learning at home

With the new coronavirus quickly spreading throughout the state, including multiple cases confirmed in Leflore County, all area public and private schools have been closed this past week and will continue to be closed next week.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
