The Viking Half Marathon & 5K will run through Greenwood next weekend.

“We’ve had good success with this race,” said Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the annual event.

The Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood’s annual Cotton Ball is going virtual this year.

The event, which is Junior Auxiliary’s only fundraiser of the year, will kick off at 9 a.m. Monday with a weeklong online silent auction.

That’s Lark Brown’s advice as Greenwood-area gardeners begin to survey the damage caused by last week’s winter storm.

“It got really cold, but I think most everything is going to come back,” said Brown, a master gardener and landscape architect. “It’s just sort of hit or miss. You just don’t know until spring.”

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
