Since the first time the Rev. Greg Plata saw the Grand Canyon five years ago, he knew that one day he wanted to get a closer look at the natural marvel.

“I thought it was one the most incredible places I’d ever seen, and I thought it would be neat to go into the canyon,” Plata said. “It was on my bucket list.”

Former Greenwood resident Amy Showalter left the finale of NBC’s “The Winner Is” earlier than she anticipated and empty-handed Thursday night.

Showalter was in a first-round singing duel with Sharde Bivans, a math and science teacher from Los Angeles.

GHS grad to compete for $1M Thursday

Greenwood High School graduate Amy Showalter will compete on the finale of NBC’s summer hit “The Winner Is” on Thursday.

The show includes soloists, duets and groups of all ages competing for a grand prize of $1 million.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
