Former Greenwood resident Amy Showalter left the finale of NBC’s “The Winner Is” earlier than she anticipated and empty-handed Thursday night.
Showalter was in a first-round singing duel with Sharde Bivans, a math and science teacher from Los Angeles.
Showalter performed first, singing “Gunpowder and Lead.” Bivans followed with “I Have Nothing,” hitting high notes that helped her capture the majority of the votes.
“I may not can sing a high A, but I can give an A-plus performance,” Showalter said as she and Bivans waited for the results.
Neither contestant opted to take the $50,000 before the results were revealed.
Bivans went on to the next round of singing duels with 88 votes. Showalter received 13 votes.
Bivans remained in the competition until the final duel against Katie Ohh, a nurse from Nashville, Tenn.
Ohh won the competition by 13 votes and took home the $1 million pize.
Showalter was born in Columbus and lived in Louisville before moving to Greenwood during her junior year in high school.
She is a 1987 graduate of Greenwood High School and a 1992 graduate of Delta State University. She now resides in California with her husband, Chuck Schwal.
