Will 3rd time be charm for local Miss Miss. hopeful?

Hannah Leflore is hoping third time’s the charm.

This week, the Greenwood resident is in Vicksburg to compete at the 2017 Miss Mississippi Pageant. This is her third trip to the state competition.

“I’m really excited to be here and to be on stage again, and hopefully I can bring back the crown,” said Leflore.

Project teaches eighth-graders appreciation of blues heritage

Pillow Academy’s eighth-grade drama class recently capped the school year with a month-long “Celebrate the Blues” project.

The students studied the origins of blues music in the Mississippi Delta and the music pioneers from the Greenwood area and around the world.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
