Backpacks, other items to be given at back-to-school events

Two back-to-school giveaways will be held Saturday in Greenwood.

Westminster Presbyterian Church is holding its second annual “GO. LOVE. GREENWOOD. Backpack & School Supplies Drive.”

The backpack distribution day will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rail Spike Park Pavilion.

This year, Bikes, Blues & Bayous has a choice of three jersey styles — a men’s neon green and a women’s neon pink short sleeve jersey and a tank top jersey. That’s how to participate in the Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market’s cookbook swap, which will be held Saturday.

“It’s been a hot summer and we’re in the dog days of summer now, so this will be something fun to do at the market,” said Beth Stevens, market manager.

State pageant winner ‘shocked, excited’

Madelyn Singleton of Greenwood says winning the title of Pre-Teen Miss Magnolia State 2018 was like a dream come true.

“When it came down to the final five, I was so nervous,” said the 11-year-old.

Then, she said, when the top two contestants were being announced, her hands were shaking and she balled them up.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
