Bring a cookbook. Take a cookbook.
That’s how to participate in the Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market’s cookbook swap, which will be held Saturday.
“It’s been a hot summer and we’re in the dog days of summer now, so this will be something fun to do at the market,” said Beth Stevens, market manager.
This is the time of year when summer produce is in full production. Stevens said those participating in the swap can purchase items at the market, select a cookbook and try out a new recipe using their fresh ingredients.
“When you buy things at the market, sometimes you need a new recipe to cook,” she said. “Everybody has cookbooks lying around that they don’t use anymore. Bring it to the farmers market, and swap it out for another one.”
There will be a designated table to drop off cookbooks and select one to take home. Those participating in the cookbook swap should not only leave a cookbook but must also take one.
“If you have a couple of cookbooks that you’ve had for a long time and haven’t used or maybe two copies of the same cookbook and don’t need both, bring it,” said Stevens. “There’s probably somebody out there who may want that cookbook. ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’”
Some people even enjoy collecting cookbooks.
“There are some really good cookbooks out there that may not be in print anymore. Bring it, because somebody may have been looking for that copy for years,” said Stevens. “We hope people will come have some fun with this.”
Stevens said the market is having a good season. Although the weather has not been optimal for gardeners this year, Stevens said the market has maintained a good supply of produce.
“When you are dealing with Mother Nature, it’s a toss-up,” said Stevens, who also grows heirloom tomatoes and sells them at the market. “But the weather hasn’t hurt the market’s selection.”
Stevens said the market is always looking for new vendors and will need a pumpkin vendor in the fall.
“We want to keep a healthy blend of customers and vendors,” she said.
The market also now accepts EBT cards and has a variety of fresh produce and food items that can be purchased with those cards.
The Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market will hold a farm-to-table brunch on Aug. 25. Tickets are limited, and those interested in attending should visit the market manager’s table.
Located at the Rail Spike Park Pavilion, the market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through October.
