Rail Spike Park reaches US 82

Greenwood’s Rail Spike Park has reached a milestone.

On Thursday, crews from Malouf Construction Co. began pouring concrete at the westernmost boundary of the park, near U.S. 82.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done. They’ve put a lot of attention on the pavilion,” said Mayor Carolyn McAdams.

Dentist recalled as ‘finest gentleman’

Dr. Thad Leggett Andrews was known as the kind of dentist who naturally brought a smile to your face.

“He was just the finest gentleman there ever was,” said longtime family friend Elizabeth Melton.

Dr. Andrews passed away at Indywood Glen Personal Care Home on Tuesday at the age of 87.

500 sign up to hit streets Saturday

About 500 people had registered for Saturday’s 36th annual 300 Oaks Road Race as of Wednesday, said Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re actually a little bit ahead of where we were last year at this time,” she said. “That’s a positive note.”

Fatal shooting suspect to be released

A Leflore County man, held for investigation in a fatal shooting since Friday, is to be released today “pending the case going to the next grand jury,” Sheriff Ricky Banks said.

Banks said no charges have been filed against the 30-year-old involving last Thursday’s shooting of Michael Barker.
