Area Vietnam veterans honored

America’s Vietnam veterans were honored for their courage and sacrifice at a special commemoration program Friday.

The program, which attracted Vietnam-era veterans from across the Delta, was coordinated by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson and American Legion Post 200. It was held at the Leflore County Civic Center.

New radio system will help Fire Dept.

The Greenwood Fire Department has adopted a new system designed to improve its communications in emergencies.

Known as the MSWIN, or Mississippi Wireless Information Network, the system became operational Tuesday.

Fire Chief Marcus Banks said the network’s development came in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Event to honor Vietnam vets

A ceremony will be held Friday to honor the men and women who served during the Vietnam War.

The ceremony will be from 10 a.m. until noon at the Leflore County Civic Center. It is sponsored by American Legion Post 200.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said Wednesday that the recognition of the veterans is long overdue.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
