Itta Bena will be receiving more than $255,000 to improve its sewage lagoons.

The award was part of $7.2 million in funding announced Wednesday by the Delta Regional Authority for projects in eight Mississippi communities.

The announcements were made at Mississippi Valley State University.

Operation of garbage trucks under scrutiny

The operation of Greenwood’s fleet of garbage trucks has become the recent focal point of a public interest organization.

The Taxpayers Channel has reported this month on several incidents, including one collision with a passenger car, involving the city’s new solo-operator garbage trucks.

Not many violations of burn ban so far

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said there have only been a few violations of a burn ban in the county since it was implemented two weeks ago.

“We’ve had a few calls. Mostly farmers trying to burn their fields off. Once we informed them of the ban, they put them out,” Banks said.

Foundation intern loves her work

Anyone who knows Dorothy Reaves Beasley knows she doesn’t sit still for long.

For a little more than a year, Beasley has served as an intern at the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation while pursuing a master’s degree in social work at Mississippi Valley State University.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.
