Woman charged with murder

A Greenwood woman has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Jackson man Monday afternoon.

Lula Mae Duncan, 39, 619 Carrollton Ave., has been charged in the death of Edmund Simpson, 58, 2145 Summit, No. 4, Jackson.

Duncan remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning. Her bond has been set at $250,000.

Man shot, killed on Roosevelt

A Jackson man was shot and killed Monday afternoon in Greenwood, and a female suspect is in custody, Police Chief Ray Moore said today.

Moore said police received a call at about 1:20 p.m. reporting that shots had been fired in the 1000 block of Roosevelt Avenue.

Orphanage event center named for Tillman

Joseph Tillman was a young man full of promise whose life was tragically cut short in November.

While his family and friends still grieve, an effort is under way to remember him for the life he led. The Tillman Event Center, named after him, is now a part of the Big Heart Orphanage of Reynosa, Mexico.

Mayor: Police a top priority in '17

Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams has made her wish list for 2017. Law enforcement — which includes, among other things, hiring more police officers and the possible implementation of ShotSpotter technology — is at the top.

“My main concern is our Police Department, in trying to figure out how to get new policemen,” McAdams said.
