A Jackson man was shot and killed Monday afternoon in Greenwood, and a female suspect is in custody, Police Chief Ray Moore said today.
Moore said police received a call at about 1:20 p.m. reporting that shots had been fired in the 1000 block of Roosevelt Avenue.
The victim, identified as Edmund Simpson, 58, 2145 Summit Ave., Jackson, was found dead of a single gunshot wound.
“When officers arrived, he was lying on his back beside a truck and he was unresponsive,” the chief said.
Simpson’s death is Greenwood’s ninth homicide of the year.
The Commonwealth does not publish the names of suspects until they are formally charged.
Simpson died from a single bullet fired from a .30-30 hunting rifle. The bullet first entered his arm and then his chest before exiting out his back, Moore said.
The weapon believed to have been used has been recovered, he said. The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
There have been 14 homicides in Leflore County in 2016, including the nine in Greenwood.
Those with information on the shooting are encouraged to call the police at 453-3311 or Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
