La Piñata closed for good Feb. 22, but three brothers are busy preparing to open a new Mexican restaurant, No Way Jose, in the Park Avenue building.

By Wednesday, Carlos Martinez and his brother, Julio Martinez, were busy doing some hands-on remodeling. The third brother and co-owner is Jose Pablo Martinez.

Man charged for Sun. gunfire

An Itta Bena man has been charged with aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied dwelling early Sunday morning.

Markevis Swinney, 18, 114 Kennedy Drive, remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning.

Bond for Swinney was set Thursday at $100,000, according to Acting Itta Bena Police Chief Ted Washington.

Man accused of rape

An Itta Bena man has been charged with the Sunday morning rape of a woman in the small town.

Pasarrio Collins, 21, 102 Greer St., remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning.

Bond in the case has been set at $75,000, according to Acting Itta Bena Police Chief Ted Washington.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
