District seeks 7% tax increase

Facing a projected budget shortfall of more than $630,000 for the next school year, the Leflore County School District is proposing a 7 percent increase in local school taxes.

Discount chain Family Dollar is expanding in Greenwood in a big way.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based company is nearing completion on construction of a store on Mississippi 7. Construction of a second store, to be located at Whittington Park Drive, off U.S. 82, has yet to begin.

Greg Winters, an employee at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, is active in the community and his church. Winters serves on the Greenwood Interfaith Ministries’ Board of Directors and is a deacon at McKinney Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.

That was the message delivered by several people Saturday as the group held its ninth annual prayer breakfast at the Leflore County Civic Center.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
