Tax increase hearing draws large crowd

A proposed 7 percent increase in ad valorem taxes to fund the 2015-2016 budget of the Leflore County School District drew a large crowd Tuesday night.

The hourlong public hearing was held at the district’s offices.

The proposed tax increase, which is to be acted on Friday, comes on the heels of a 7 percent increase in 2014.

Mayor appeals legal fees ruling

BGreenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams is appealing a circuit judge’s May ruling against the city hiring a law firm to represent election officials as part of an election challenge involving McAdams and Sheriel Perkins.

McAdams said the appeal will go before the Mississippi Supreme Court.

The Leflore County School District will hold a public hearing Tuesday on the district’s 2015-16 budget, which includes a tax increase of up to 7 percent.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the school district’s office, located at 1901 U.S. 82 West.
