Price uncertainty concerns farmers

As Leflore County farmers are winding down their harvesting operations, there remains uncertainty about the prices they’ll receive for their crops.

Changes in the federal 2014 Farm Bill have altered the way cotton acres — known by farmers as the cotton base — and the non-cotton crops that are now planted on those fields are valued.

Orthodontist ‘very dedicated person’

Dr. Shelley Huddleston Phillips, a longtime orthodontist, made the most of his life, daughter Teri White said today.

“He was a very dedicated person,” White said. “Whatever he decided to do, he went at it wholeheartedly. He had a good sense of humor and even a mischievous side.”

Burned cotton smolders outside Wildwood Gin Co. Thursday afternoon. The gin was operating when the fire broke out early Thursday. The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.

Electrical mishap blamed for gin fire

An early-morning fire Thursday that destroyed several hundred bales of cotton and heavily damaged the Wildwood Gin Co. outside Money was apparently accidental, said Leflore County Fire Coordinator Bobby Norwood.

“From what I understand — I’ve talked to several people — something shorted out,” Norwood said.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
