Council approves Mayes’ nomination

The Greenwood City Council unanimously approved Deirdre Mayes as the newest member of the Greenwood School Board at its Tuesday meeting.

Mayes, a longtime Greenwood city clerk and former business manager of the school district, moved quickly to attend her first meeting of the school board, which also was held Tuesday.

Pro-42 rally draws few

A few supporters of Initiative 42, a statewide ballot initiative regarding funding of the public schools, held a rally at the Leflore County Courthouse on Monday in an effort to draw attention to the issue in advance of the Nov. 3 general election.

Firefighter living dream

Lt. Shun Byrd is living his life’s dream as a Greenwood firefighter.

“It’s been a great success. It’s been good, real good,” said Byrd, 35.

Becoming a lieutenant with the Fire Department didn’t happen overnight. Byrd has been at it since he joined the department back in 2007.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
