Police: Scammers at work in area

Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore is advising residents to exercise caution in dealing with callers asking for money.

He said he had “probably had about eight to 10 phone calls” about phone scams.

Serrena Williams, a volunteer with the Greenwood Salvation Army, sorts gifts for children this morning at the Mississippi National Guard Armory on Sycamore Avenue. The Salvation Army had all of its 258 families on its Adopt-A-Family list adopted by Wednesday. Donations are still needed to help fund the Army’s overall budget. Williams is also a member of the Salvation Army Church of Greenwood.

Salvation Army Capt. Benjamin Deuel said today that he is grateful that all 259 families in this year’s Adopt-A-Family campaign have been adopted.

“It is a blessing for us that the community has stepped up,” said Deuel, the corps officer for the Greenwood Salvation Army, who serves with his wife, Capt. Wendy Deuel.

Council OKs Clark for school board

The Greenwood City Council unanimously approved businessman Randy Clark to serve on the Greenwood School Board on Tuesday.

Clark, 66, the owner of Clark Insurance Agency, replaces Connie Johnson on the board and will serve a five-year term.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
