Veteran educator new conservator

Dr. Ilean Richards of Greenville, a longtime Delta educator, has been appointed conservator of the Leflore County School District.

The state Department of Education announced Richards’ appointment Monday. Richards, 68, will become the conservator of the 2,500-student district Jan. 4.

Police Dept. nearly at full strength

Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore says his department is nearing full strength.

“I’m a lot closer than what I was,” said Moore.

The Police Department’s authorized strength is 60 sworn officers. It currently has 58 — nine of whom are trainees.

Businessman, friends to serve meal to needy

For sometime Greenwood businessman Alonzo Evans has thought about giving back to the community.

Now, Evans is in the final stages of planning a Christmas Day meal for the needy and homeless.

The effort will culminate with the Christmas meal for as many as 200 at the Elks Lodge, 106 E. Scott St.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
