Nearly 400 set to run

Nearly 400 people had registered for Saturday’s Viking Half Marathon and 5K as of this morning, said Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber is the facilitator of the annual event, which features a 13.1-mile half marathon and a 5K run.

City seeks state grant to improve Fulton Street

Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams is hoping that the city will get state funding to improve downtown Fulton Street.

If approved, the $1.4 million TAP (Transportation Alternative Program) grant would be used to provide new sidewalks, historical streetlighting and handicapped accessibility to the historic thoroughfare, McAdams said.

Project’s goal to improve water service

A pipe leading from a fire hydrant behind Mallette Furniture Co. is playing a part in Greenwood Utilities’ plan for improved water service.

The fire hydrant is owned by the city, and Greenwood Utilities supplies the water for it, said Larry Griggs, executive vice president of operations for the municipally owned utility.

Man to face murder charge in shooting

A Greenwood man, jailed since Feb. 14 for a shooting that wounded a Minter City woman, now will be charged with first-degree murder.

Generio Harris, 24, 300 Valley Drive, has remained in the Leflore County Jail since the shooting of Kajta Allen, 22, who died Saturday at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
