A Greenwood firefighter slain in a shooting Sunday night had a bright future, Mayor Carolyn McAdams said.

Apprentice Firefighter Tyree Jernigan, 23, 118 E. Taft St., died Monday at Greenwood Leflore Hospital from a single shotgun wound to his head, according to Police Chief Ray Moore.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
