Supervisors accept settlement offer in Gold Kist case

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors has accepted an undisclosed settlement offer from Gold Kist to resolve a land dispute.

The supervisors approved the offer Monday by a 4-1 vote, subject to some revisions by Board Attorney Willie J. Perkins Sr. District 1 Supervisor Phil Wolfe voted against the offer.

Delta Center gets a big check for the USDA

INDIANOLA - The Delta Center workforce training facility in Indianola received a $498,000 check from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday, along with some high praise for its goals.

Nick Walters, state director of USDA Rural Development, presented the Rural Business Enterprise Grant check to the leaders of the center.

Childhood education degree approved

A new degree program in Mississippi Valley State University's College of Education is expected to make a difference in the quality of instruction for children.

The university recently received approval from the state College Board to offer a degree program in early childhood education this fall.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
